Amy’s story

Amy signed up to take on her own Walk of Light in 2022 and has been carrying on the tradition since.

“For two years, my husband Joel, our little girl Isla (5 years old) and I were living alongside leukaemia completely unaware. We were fighting blood cancer with hot water bottles and paracetamol.

Joel was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukaemia) at just 30 years old. We signed up to Walk of Light as a family after Joel’s diagnosis. Isla wanted to raise money to help her daddy. She asked me “Mummy, if I raise lots of money, will they make a better medicine for daddy?”

Isla invited her friends to join her in her mission to shine a light on blood cancer. When the sun set, we began our Walk of Light. It was truly heart-warming to see the children with their glow sticks and lanterns enjoying themselves so much. Isla wanted everyone to know she was walking for her daddy.

Finally, after 138 days in hospital, I brought Joel home. He's currently in remission and having regular chemotherapy. He defied all odds, and I couldn’t be prouder of him.”
